A visit to the dentist can reveal a lot about the health of your teeth and gums. However, what people often don’t realise is that it can also be indicative of your general health. Here are some of the things your dentist will be able to assess by examining your mouth:

  • How stressed you are. If your tooth enamel is becoming worn down, you may be suffering from stress and grinding your teeth in your sleep.
  • Whether you are showing signs of diabetes. People with type 1 and type 1 diabetes are more at risk from gum disease, so problems with your gums could be a sign of more serious health problems.
  • Whether you are at risk of oral cancer. Your dentist will be able to look for early signs, which usually consist of a sore or spot on the lips, gums, tongue or cheek lining. Patients tend not to notice it themselves.
